Robert "Bob" Neal White

December 28, 1930 ~ December 28, 2020 (age 90)

Obituary

Robert Neal White passed away peacefully on his 90th birthday, December 28, 2020, after celebrating the milestone with his close family the day before.  Born Dec. 28, 1930, in Louisville, Ky., he is predeceased by his parents Lena Mae White and Homer Castle White, his brothers Stanley White and Wesley White, his son Daniel Allen White, and his beloved wife of 65 years and high school sweetheart Marilyn Joyce White.  They married September 13, 1952, and were both graduates of New Albany High School.

Robert received a Bachelor's in Education degree from the University of Louisville.  He joined the Navy in 1950 and served as Junior Navy Lieutenant.  After returning from the Korean War, he went to school in California and Indiana, the latter where he received his Master's in Business Administration degree.  He went on to become a longtime teacher in physics, science and algebra.  His love and legacy of teaching lives on through his students.  Many students later in life would come up to Robert to shake his hand and say thank you.  He retired after more than 30 years, ending his career as Business Manager for Clarksville Community Schools.  When there was bad weather, he would get up at 4 a.m. to make sure roads were safe for buses and children.

With his loving wife, Marilyn, at his side, Robert continued giving to his community.  He and Marilyn volunteered for the Indiana Retired Teachers Association for more than two decades.  He served briefly as IRTA President.  They also volunteered for Hope Inc. and AARP and were active lobbyists in Indiana's state capital, Indianapolis.  It was very important to him to help his community and family, as they worked tirelessly together to help others.  "Never let someone tell you, you can't do something," he told family members.

Although his eyes kept him from joining the Air Force, he had deep love for airplanes, and flying and travelling.  He loved building model airplanes with his three sons, shooting model rockets and taking the family on excursions to state and national parks.  Bob was a regular visitor at Happs Airport in Jeffersonville, where he loved to watch the airplanes and later tell stories to his children and grandchildren.  He and Marilyn loved Robert's devotion to his family.  This was by far his life's highest honor.  His devotion to his family of 5 children included storytelling from years past and designing and building a dream house in the country.  His spirit, giving nature and kind soul will be missed by family and friends, along with so many others.  He will live on through them for many years.

Robert is survived by his two loving sons, David White (wife Vicki) and Lawrence White (wife Marie), two daughters Kathryn Grant and Deborah Brock, six grandchildren, Nicholas White (wife Nancy), Alexander Grant, Christopher White, Amy White, Courtney Brock and Devon Brock, four great-grandchildren, Peyton, Scarlett, Waylon, and Willie, brother Charles White (wife Margaret), plus many nieces, in-laws, extended family and friends.
